Cooking beef tenderloin on the BBQ is easy when you follow these quick tips.

1. The best beef tenderloin for grilling is USDA Prime Aged Beef. If that is not available then go for Choice Beef.

2. Before grilling beef tenderloin trim the ends (save them, though, they taste great in stir-fry and stew).

3. Tie tenderloin with butcher twine every two inches, and snip the silverskin to keep the beef from bowing while it's being grilled.

4. This type of meat, while very tender, lacks flavor. It needs help from a stuffing, marinade, sauce, or rub. You can find our suggestions in the beef tenderloin recipes section of this page.

5. Whether grilling whole beef tenderloin or just the center-cut, it should be brought to room temperature before grilling. This avoids charring the outside while waiting for the inside to cook.

How to Grill Beef Tenderloin

1. Preheat the grill as follows:

Indirect heat, medium-high
(400 - 450 degrees F), grate on lowest setting

Indirect heat, light ash, 3 dozen coals on one half of grill, grate on lowest setting

2. Before grilling beef tenderloin, lightly oil the grate. This prevents sticking and cracking which can cause your meat to dry out.

3. Place tenderloin on the grill over direct heat, cover, and sear on all four sides of beef tenderloin (about 5 minutes per side or twenty minutes total).

4. Move the meat out of direct heat, close lid and continue grilling according to the chart below depending on your desired level of doneness. Have a sprayer handy to avoid flare-ups.

Grilling Tip:
Beef tenderloin is an expensive cut of meat so you don't want to overcook it. Don't guess. Use a meat thermometer.

Beef Tenderloin Grilling Times
(after searing)

Medium-Rare (5 minutes,
120 degrees F)

Medium (8 - 10 minutes,
130 degrees F)

Well (10 - 15 minutes,
140 degrees F)

(Grilling time is based on 3 pounds whole beef tenderloin. Grilling time should be adjusted according to weight.)

5. After grilling any beef tenderloin recipe, tent it with foil, and let it rest 10 - 15 minutes before cutting or serving to allow juices to distribute evenly.

Grilled Beef Tenderloin Recipes

Stuffed Beef Tenderloin

Easy gourmet recipe for beef tenderloin stuffed with bacon and goat cheese and rolled in pesto.

(Serves 6)
Time: Under 1 Hour

  • 1 beef tenderloin (3 lbs), trimmmed

  • 8 oz of goat cheese

  • 6 pieces of bacon, cooked and crumbled

  • Butcher twine

  • 2 cups of basil

  • 3 cloves of garlic

  • 1 tablespoon pine nuts

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 1/3 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • Cooking Beef Tenderloin
    on the Grill

    1. Lengthwise, cut halfway through the tenderloin (see video for clarification).

    2. Stuff beef tenderloin with the goat cheese and crumbled pieces of cooked bacon.

    3. Use butcher twine to tie tenderloin together every two inches.

    4. Finely chop the basil, garlic, and pine nuts in a food processor. Add the olive oil, salt, and pepper and pulse everything into a pesto paste.

    5. Rub pesto all over the outside of the stuffed beef tenderloin. Wrap in plastic and set-aside for ten minutes.

    6. Preheat grill and cook beef tenderloin on the grill per the instructions on this page.
