Our Best Grilled Salmon Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 6)
Time: Under 30 Minutes

  • 1 1/2 pounds salmon fillets (or steaks)

  • Lemon pepper to taste
  • No lemon pepper? Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon black pepper onto salmon and add 1/3 cup lemon juice to the marinade.
  • Garlic powder to taste

  • Salt to taste

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  • 1/3 cup water

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)

  • Directions
Sprinkle salmon lemon pepper, garlic powder, and salt to taste.

Use a blender to combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, water, and olive oil until the sugar dissolves. Place salmon and marinade in a large resealable plastic bag. Turn to coat then refrigerate and allow to marinate at least 1 1/2 hours (the longer the better).

Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes prior to grilling to bring the fish to room temperature.

Clean and lightly oil grill grate. Preheat for medium heat (300-400 degrees F). If you're using charcoal, the grill is ready when you can hold the palm of your hand two inches above the grate for only 4 -5 seconds before pulling away.

To grill salmon fillets, place them face down on the grill directly over the flames or coals (direct heat). The skin side should be up (flesh side facing the flames or hot coals). This will glaze it and seal in moisture. Brush your fish with marinade. Cover your grill for 4 - 5 minutes. Then use a spatula to flip to the skin side.

Grill for another 4 - 5 minutes. The fatty skin of the salmon fillet will protect the meat from overdrying even though the skin itself may become charred in the process. It is done when it flakes easily with a fork.

To remove it from the grill, slip a spatula between the skin and the meat and lift the salmon away from the skin leaving the skin stuck to the grill. If you want to serve it with the skin still on, a spatula is still the tool to remove it from the grill.

If you're using salmon steaks in our best grilled salmon recipe then grill each side 4 - 5 minutes directly over the flames or coals (direct heat). Total cooking time should be 8 - 10 minutes.

    Grilling Tips

Discard marinade or cook it in a sauce pan over medium high eat on the stove until it reduces to create a delicious topping for your grilled salmon.

    Grilling Rained Out?

To Bake: Place each fillet or steak and some marinade on top of foil then close up the foil leaving some space for air to circulate inside. Bake on a cookie sheet at 425 degrees for 15 minutes (add time if you are making more than the recipe calls for).

Stovetop: Place salmon and all of the marinade in a skillet or frying pan over medium high heat. Cook flesh side down, turning once after 7 minutes, until marinade has reduced and salmon flakes easily with a fork.
