Grilled Chicken Wings Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 12)
Time: 40 minutes

  • 6 pounds chicken wings, separated at joints, tips discarded
  • BBQ Chicken Wing Sauce Recipe

  • 1 1/2 cups hot wing sauce

  • 2/3 cup butter

  • 1 cup honey

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)

    Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat.

    Let your chicken wings rest at room temperature for at least 20 minutes because they will sear better than cold wings and create a nicer crust.

    Meanwhile clean and preheat your grill for high heat (600 - 800 degrees F). If you're using charcoal, pile up the coals on only one side of your grill. It is ready for hight heat when you can hold the palm of your hand two inches above the grate for only 1 - 2 seconds before pulling away.

    Wipe the grill grate with olive oil, using a rag or paper towel. This will keep your chicken wings from sticking to the BBQ during the grilling process.

    Place chicken wings on the grill in an organized manner to allow air to circulate. If you're using charcoal, place chicken wings directly over the coals. Cover grill.

    Grill for about 5 minutes or until good grill marks appear. Then flip each chicken wing and grill for 3 minutes more or until juices run clear (or the internal temperature reaches 170 - 180 degrees F). Remove grilled chicken wings to a large roasting pan (or other baking dish).

    In a saucepan over medium heat, mix together the hot sauce, butter, honey, brown sugar, garlic salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Warm until blended and heated through, about 5 minutes. Pour the sauce over the grilled chicken wings and stir to coat.

    Return chicken wings to the grill. Turn the heat down to medium if you're gas grilling. If you're using charcoal, place the chicken wings over indirect heat (the side of your grill with no coals). Cover the grill.

    Continue grilling barbequed chicken wings 5 - 7 minutes per side or until juices run clear (internal temperature should be 170 - 180 degrees F).

    Grilling Chicken Wings Cancelled Due to Rain?
    Turn these barbequed chicken wings into oven baked chicken wings.

    Place wings on a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees F. Prepare sauce as directed. Turn up oven to broil. Return chicken wings to oven and bake at broiling temperature for 5 more minutes.
