Grilled Mackerel Recipe


Grilling Tips for Cooking Mackerel

Preheat grill for medium-high heat (400 degrees F).

Grilled mackerel only takes about 3 minutes per side to cook through.

This fish has a tendency to stick to the grill so be sure to liberally oil the grate and rub oil on the fish. Or just grill it on top of foil.

We recommend leaving the skin on to prevent the mackerel from drying out. The skin will come off easily after it's done grilling.




Easy Hot N Spicy Grilled Mackerel Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4)
Time: 30 Minutes

  • 1/2 cup olive oil


  • 1/4 cup ketchup


  • 1/4 cup Sriracha hot sauce


  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice


  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder


  • 1 teaspoon salt


  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper


  • 1 white onion, sliced


  • 1 lb mackerel fish fillets, skin-on


  • Directions for Cooking Mackerel on the Grill

    In a small food processor or blender, add the olive oil, ketchup, hot sauce, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Blend for at least 15 seconds to thoroughly combine all the flavors.

    Add hot n spicy marinade, onion slices, and mackerel to a large resealable plastic bag. Seal and turn to coat. Open, squeeze out excess air, and reseal.

    Marinate everything while you preheat your grill for medium-high heat (400 degrees F).

    Wrap the seasoned onion slices in foil. Leave some room in the foil packet for air to circulate and poke a few holes in the foil after crimping the edges.

    Oil the grate. Place your foil wrapped onions on the grill and cover for 20 minutes. Then add your mackerel fish to the grill skin-side down. Cooking mackerel on the grill only takes about 3 minutes per side.

    When the fish is done remove everything from the grill. Top each piece of grilled mackerel with the grilled onion slices and serve.
