Cooking Mussels on the Grill in a White Wine Sauce

While watching this video, keep in mind these grilling tips:

Preheat grill for medium-high heat (400 degrees F).

Grilled mussels are done when they open up. It usually only takes 8 - 10 minutes.

This recipe is very adaptable. For example, sub onions for the shallots, dried parsley for fresh, and you can take or leave the red pepper flakes. The dish will still be delicious. Be sure to serve it with some crusty bread to soak-up the leftover sauce.

You can also ditch the roasting pan and grill your mussels directly on the grate. Just place the white wine sauce in a grill safe pan next to the mussels. Remember to close the lid and the steam from the white wine sauce will flavor your seafood along with the smoke. Afterwards drizzle the white wine sauce over your seafood and garnish with parsley.

Or place an even portion of the mussels and sauce inside homemade foil packets and grill 'em that way.



Grilled Mussels in a Black Bean Sauce

This is an asian-flavored grilled seafood recipe.

Ingredients (Serves 4)
Time: 30 Minutes

  • 4 tablespoons of butter, softened


  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced


  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger root


  • 1 tablespoon black bean sauce


  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil


  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper


  • 2 pounds mussels, scrubbed and debearded


  • 1 lemon, cut into four wedges


  • Directions for Cooking Mussels on the Grill

    Preheat your grill for medium-high heat (400 degrees F).

    In a small food processor or blender, add the butter, minced garlic, minced ginger, black bean sauce, sesame oil, and black pepper. Blend for at least 15 seconds.

    Create four foil packets. Place an even portion of mussels and black bean sauce mixture into each packet. Seal the edges.

    Lightly oil the grate and grill mussels 8 - 10 minutes until they open up.

    Serve each portion of mussels with a wedge of lemon.


    Curry Flavored Grilled Mussels

    Ingredients (Serves 4)
    Time: 30 Minutes

  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened


  • 3 cloves garlic, minced


  • 1 teaspoon curry powder


  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin


  • 1/8 teaspoon salt


  • 2 pounds mussels, scrubbed and debearded


  • 1 cup red bell pepper, chopped


  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped


  • 1 lime, thinly sliced


  • 1 lime, quartered


  • How to Cook Mussels on the Grill

    Preheat grill for medium-high heat (400 degrees F)

    In a small bowl, whisk together the butter, minced garlic, curry powder, ground cumin, and salt.

    Create four foil packets. Inside each packet, place an even portion of mussels, curry sauce, chopped red bell pepper, fresh parsley, and 1 lime slice. Seal the edges.

    Lightly oil the grate and grill mussels 8 - 10 minutes until they open up.

    Serve each portion of mussels with a wedge of lime and some crusty bread to soak up the sauce.
