Grilled Tuna Recipes

Easy grilled tuna recipes for grilling albacore tuna wrapped in bacon, an awesome grilled tuna sandwich recipe, and ahi grilled tuna steaks with a zesty dill sauce. Try one and tell us what you think at the bottom of this page.

How To Grill Tuna

Grilling Tip:
Whether you're grilling tuna steaks, ahi fillets, or albacore loins, grilled rare tuna only takes about 5 minutes per side, medium rare about 6 -7 minutes per side, and 8-9 minutes per side for well done.

Tuna cooked all the way through tends to be on the dry side so have flavorful dressing for it (see our ahi grilled tuna steaks with a zesty dill sauce below). You can cook it all the way through and maintain its moistness if you wrap it in bacon (see recipe below).

Adjust the grilling times for each of our grilled tuna recipes according to your preferred doneness.

Grilled Ahi Tuna Recipe
With Zesty Dill Sauce

Ingredients (Serves 4-6)
Time: Under 30 Minutes

  • 1/3 cup lemon juice

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1/3 cup olive oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger (optional)

  • 4 1 inch thick ahi tuna steaks

  • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard

  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

  • 1/3 cup olive oil

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried dill (to taste)

  • Directions

    In a blender combine the lemon juice, soy sauce, olive oil, and ginger. Pour marinade into a large, resealable plastic bag. Add tuna steaks. Remove excess air, seal and shake. Allow to marinate at room temperature while grill preheats.

    Preheat grill to high heat (500 degrees F). You know the grill is ready when you can place your hand a few inches above the open grill grate for only 1 - 2 seconds before pulling away.

    In a small bowl mix together the remaining ingredients (brown mustard, dried mustard, sugar, vinegar, and olive oil). Stir in the dill.

    Remove your marinated ahi tuna from bag and discard leftover marinade. Grill ahi tuna steaks 5 minutes per side or until they flake easily with a fork. Serve with dill sauce for dipping or top each grilled tuna steak with the dill sauce before serving.

    Grilled Albacore Tuna
    Wrapped in Bacon

    Time: Under 30 Minutes

    This grilled tuna recipe is so simple but so good. When albacore is wrapped in bacon and grilled the whole dish tastes like bacon. We've served this to people who don't like fish and they love it!

  • Albacore tuna loin

  • Bacon

  • Lemon (for fresh juice)

  • Grilling Directions

    Cut the loin in medallions the width of your bacon strips.

    Partially cook the bacon in the microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes.

    Grilling Tip:
    This makes the bacon easier to handle and speeds up the cooking process so your tuna doesn't over cook on the grill while you're waiting for the bacon to cook completely. Preheat grill for high heat (500 degrees F).

    Wrap each piece of albacore tuna with a slice of partially cooked bacon.

    Lightly oil grill grate and grill bacon-wrapped albacore tuna about 7 minutes per side.

    This grilled tuna recipe is best served with freshly squeezed lemon.

    Best Grilled Tuna Sandwich Recipe

    Ingredients (Serves 4 - 6)
    Time: Under 30 Minutes

  • 1 to 1 1/2 pounds fresh tuna

  • 4 - 6 Buns

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped celery

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion

  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

  • 3/4 teaspoon red wine vinegar

  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

  • 8 slices ripe tomato

  • Cayenne pepper (or paprika), for garnish

  • Directions

    Preheat grill medium-high heat (500 degrees F). Grill tuna until it flakes easily with a fork (about 7 minutes per side). Toast buns while grilling tuna.

    Transfer grilled tuna to a mixing bowl. Grind it with a fork.

    Mix in minced garlic, mayo, celery, red onion, parsley, red wine vinegar, and black pepper.

    Layer each bun with tuna mixture, cheese, tomato, cheese. Broil everything until cheese has melted (about 3 minutes). Sprinkle each with cayenne pepper, top with bun, and serve.
