Marinated Flank Steak Recipe

Flank Steak Marinade Ingredients
(Serves 6)
Time: 6 1/2 Hours
(includes marinating)

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil


  • 1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce


  • 1/4 cup balsamic wine vinegar


  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice


  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce


  • 1 tablespoon deli-style mustard sauce (the grainier the better)


  • 2 cloves garlic, minced


  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin


  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander


  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper


  • 1 1/2 pounds flank steak
  • Marinated Flank Steak Directions

    Use a blender or food processor to combine all of the flank steak marinade ingredients (except the steak). Mix at least 15 seconds. Place flank steak and marinade in a large resealable plastic bag. Seal and turn to coat. Open, squeeze out air, reseal and refrigerate at least 6 hours to ensure fajita flavor and tenderize meat.

    Grilling Tip:
    Before grilling flank steak you want to bring it to room temperature. This will ensure even grilling and better flavor. So the last hour of marinating remove your flank steak from the fridge and set it out on the counter.

    How to Cook Flank Steak on the BBQ

    Preheat grill for medium-high heat, about 450 degrees F. Maintain this temperature at least 30 minutes. It is hot enough when you can place the palm of your hand 2 inches above the grate for only 1 - 2 seconds before pulling away.

    Lightly oil the grill grate and grill flank steak to desired doneness, turning once halfway through recommended grill time.

    To flip use tongs or a spatula, not a fork, to preserve juices.

    Cook Times for Grilling Flank Steak

    Rare 5 - 6 minutes per side
    Medium 7 - 8 minutes per side
    Well 8 - 10 minutes per side

    To serve, cut grilled flank steak diagonally across the grain into thin strips with the rest of your fajita fixings.

    TIP:
    To add even more fajita flavor to this marinated flank steak recipe, use the leftover marinade to saute your vegetables.
